Vinylphile
Announcements
Hi all,
I know it's a little late, but I wanted to let you know that the sixth issue of Vinylphile is now available for download! This issue is a bit special for us, because it marks our first birthday! Yes, it was one year ago this month that we published the first issue of Vinylphile, and we're very happy with what we've achieved so far. If nothing else, it sets the bar for next year even higher!
Here's a direct download link to the current issue:

Enjoy, and as always, thanks for reading!

That's a cool piece of software, David.
Its really surprising what kind of performers one un-earths from old piles of vinyl.... in fact, i absolutely LOVE trawling the old markets for precisely this reason. the old recordings are surprisingly good even today. it seems the sound engineers were very capable back then, despite the limitations in technology!
I have found several impulse recordings that sound superb. in fact almost all Jazz Lps from the 60s sound GREAT!
Any record from Shellac.
Tindersticks - Curtains
The Cinematic Orquestra - Motion
Lhasa de Sela - Lhasa
Yo La Tengo - Electr-o-pura
Madredeus - Os dias da Madredeus
Dave Holland Quintet - Dream of the elders
Yann Tiersen - Rue des Cascades
I promised a report on Gil Scott-Heron's "I'm New Here", quite a while back, but I got sidetracked sorting out the new Modwright phono stage (I really like it). I really like this lp, too. In a sense, it's more poetry than music, (nothing wrong with that). The music, though, however spare, is perfect to support and propel the words that Mr. Scott-Heron lays down while growing up in "On Coming From A Broken Home" . The whole album is worth hearing, and indeed, it is one of those that bear repeated hearing. I am not a writer, so I will avoid embarassing myself further by attempting a full review here, but let it be said, this is a powerful album, full of many thruths, my advice is to get it quick.
Cheers to all,
Dan Thomason
