I've been an audiophile for forty years, that's before I knew what one was. I've always loved vinyl, tubes, Quad 57 ESLs, and Lowthers in the right cabinets.
I've been a columnist and reviewer for Dagago for the last 5 years. This has been more fun and harder than I thought it would be.

Went to hear Ruthie Foster last night, WOW! How have I been missing such an incredible voice. Didn't matter whether it was blues, rock, country, folk or gospel she could do it all. If you haven't heard her you need to. I have not heard any of her recordings yet, but I will soon.

Have any of you had a sound room with wooden plantation shutters. My room has a slider and a big window. Up until now I have had thin pleated drapes covering them.
Boy what do we reviewers get ourselves into? Yesterday I received an integrated amplifier that came freigt on a pallet. It came in three big boxes and I can't imagine how much it weighs. Now I'm suppose to move those boxes, unpack them, and find a place to put these three huge, heavy components. Wish me luck! Hope it sounds like music.
Sitting here listening to RR's vinyl release of Hot Club of San Francisco - Yerba Buena Bounce. This is once of my favorite local groups; I try to hear them several times a year. As far as I know this is their only vinyl release, if I'm wrong pleas let me know. Thank you RR for such a treat. By the way how does RR get so much more music on a 45rpm Lp than others. This has been true going back to their earliest release.
I've spent the afternoon listening to the new 4Lp box set of 4 of Janis Joplin's best Lps. Man these sound great. The music I have always found great, but I have had trouble finding good sounding Lps. These are fantastic!
Last Sunday & Monday night in San Francisco were the first official Pitch Perfect Audio Greenhaus events. It was Matt Rotunda of Pitch Perfect Audio’s homage to the Monkeyhaus that John DeVore has in New York. Matt wanted to do something special as a special treat for Jonathan Halpern of Tone Imports and John DeVore who were visiting Pitch Perfect after leaving CES 2012. We got to hear the new Devore Orangutan O/96 and Gibbon X speakers. Also Jonathan Halpern had a wonderful new speaker from LM Audio. It is a remake of the famous Western Electric 755A field coil driver in beautiful retro cabinets. All was heard through Shindo electronics and the Shindo 301 table. It was a packed house both nights and it was great to make so many new friends. I'll try to post some pictures later.
Maybe some of you got gear for Christmas; Santa just arrived at my house, no equipment but something much better.
All these great Lps.

Got the Music Direct Catalogue in the mail today. It's nice to see such a big catalogue of turntables, cartridges and lots of other equipment. Really nice photos, as well.
Yes, if it's a true mono cartridge. I have reviewed a couple of mono cartridge on dagogo.com and talked about the reason why they sound better. If your listen to older mono Lps maybe the biggest difference you will hear is surface noise. A true mono cartridge will be considerably quitter in the groves. By the way often I prefer mono recordings, but not always.
I seem to be in a rut, but what a fine rut it is. I've listened to 11 Miles Davis Lps in the last three days. Man his early music is great, especially the mono versions. Right now I'm listening to the "Someday My Prince Will Come". Man this is great stuff.
So RMAF has been a lot of fun. I still say the best thing about audio shows is getting to spend time with old friends and meeting and making new friends. It was great to meet and spend some time with Joe Roberts.
I'll be there Thursday, can't wait. Though spending four days resting by the Pacific ocean in Mendocino is pretty good preparation. Hope to see you all there.
Man, what fun we had tonight. My son and I went to hear the James Carter Organ Trio at Yoshi's in Oakland. We sat in the sec on row of table less than 10 yards from the Hammond B-3 and the big Leslie, just whirling away. The Leslie was really something to hear sitting that close. It is a very loud and a very powerful sounding system with Gerard Gibbs at the helms. It was a really amazing night of music.
It's been a Ben Webster day so far. Right now I'm listening to Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster. What a great LP. Sometime I forget how much I love Ben's music.
Had a great time last night hearing Yo Yo Ma play with the San Francisco Symphony. He was even better in person. The SF Symphony was in fine form also.
Having a mono afternoon. Listening to June Christy, Dylan, and the Beach Boys so far. I'm always amazed at how great my system sounds with the EMT 15 mono cartridge.
Jack Roberts Of course then there's the real thing.

Jack Roberts Here's a version I had never heard, but it's pretty darn good.
Jack Roberts Stacey Kent and Suzanne Vega sing Jobim's "Waters of March". Who would have thought two such good singers could mess up a Jobim master piece this badly.
Man those Tape Project demos sounded great. The $25,000 CD player sounded pretty good too. It probably would have seemed to sound better if I hadn't been listening to those delicious tapes.
Proud Papa today and feeling a little old. My oldest son turns thirty today. On that day I was 27 and about to sell my Quad 57s because of space and money. I entered my sad mini monitor stage of live with some used Linn Kans and some used Naim gear. My wife and two sons are the joy of my life and the only reason I would have given up my Quads. What a joy a great family is. Becky and I have been ma
My latest Beatnik column is up at Dagogo. I don't quite get the title Constantine gave it, but it's about room acoustics form one who hates the way most room acoustical treatments look.
Since I can't figure out how to post a comment to Dave's announcement on Issue 56 of PF being out, I'll just say here; thanks Dave for the story about your 6th grade class and the Zu speakers. I found it very uplifting!
Went to hear Hugh Masekela at Yoshi's in Oakland Friday night. Man, what a performance, the place was packed and no one could sit still. I've seen him a couple of times before, but he just gets better with age!
I've spent the afternoon listening to my system with Shindo's Silver speaker cables. $5500 for 2.5 meters verses $1250 my Teresonic's Clarison's. I have about 30 hours on them so far. I use Shindo Silver ICs because they work so well with my Shindo Preamp, and I wanted to hear their speaker wire. I've been surprised so far as to how different they sound. Both are great, no decision for a few days.
Tuck and Patti were incredible last night. If you not familiar with them check them out on Youtube. Tuck Andress is an incredible guitarist who has actually improved with age. It was a pretty fantastic Father's day gift.
