About Me
I am a forty something audiophile who is all about the music. My tastes are broad ranging across nearly all styles & genres. I cut my per-adolescent teeth on Folk & Rock. Through my High School and College years, New age, Classical, and Irish Folk were my bread & butter. As a curmudgeonly adult, I have salted the buds with Jazz & Blues. The only forms of music which give me pause are Opera & Rap. I'm spicing the menu these days with Gilbert & Sullivan Operas!

The Cary's are back! And they do sound quite good. They have new (Electro-Harmonix) KT88's in them and a couple replaced pin-sleeves. But my main speakers are now out. I took out the woofers this weekend and sent them off to a guy who claims to be able to replace the surrounds without having to cut away the center of the driver....we'll see. In the meantime, I have pair of ProAc Tablette 50's that will have to fill in. Life is hard , I know. And yes, I try to keep back-ups to my back-ups for all my components.

  • It's been repair month for April & May. 1st the Cary's go in the shop; still not out yet. Now the ProAc 200's need new base drivers. The surrounds have rotted out and they flutter & belch like winded Vikings at a feast table. They are old, but fortunately the drivers (Scanspeak - 18W 8542) are available at Madisound. So, I think I can replace them relatively easily, if not inexpensively. Who knew keeping your existing equipment running could be so troublesome? I shouldn't complain. I've had the Cary's for 6 years & the ProAc's for 12 trouble free. They're both due for some TLC....

  • My Cary mono-blocks are in the shop getting a tune up and I broke out an old integrated tube amp from China I keep in the closet for emergencies. It's a VAL VP-110, and I'm not sure they're around anymore. Anyway, I was reminded why I keep it. It's a sweet little amp and quite the giant killer. It doesn't have the presence of the Cary's, but it's just as warm and detailed and a real pleasure to listen to. I've had several offers to sell it over the years, but I doubt I ever will. You never know when you might need a back up to your back-up amp!

  • The Yes show was awesome & inspirational. It was a dream come true in many ways, since I've never seen them before and never thought I would. Singer, Jon Davidson, is a worthy replacement for Jon Anderson and Goeff Downes was admirably up to the task of replacing Rick Wakeman. I heard about the death of GD's daughter on 2/19 just before the show. Very tragic and sad. It was impressive, he went on with the tour and he did not disappoint! Howe, Squire & White were in peak form and lit up the stage with skill and showmanship. All of them were spectacular for 60 something' rockers and they really know how to put on a show. If they come anywhere near your town and you're a Yes fan, do not hesitate. Their show is off the charts awesome!

  • Going to see Yes at the Hammond Horse-shoe Casino on Saturday. Jon Anderson & Rick Wakeman will be absent, but Steve Howe, Chris Squire, & Alan White are gonna be there. 3/5 is no bad thing! I'm really psyched for the show and cannot wait. Word is they are performing, The Yes Album, Close to The Edge, and Going for the One in all their glorious entire-ties! I'm expecting near Nirvana moments......

  • Back from Day 2 and part of a 3rd at Axpona. Many very cool systems! The Soundsmith was the real standout, but Bogdan speakers & amps were also noteworthy. Snake River Audio with a 20 Watt SET setup and Volti 99db efficient speakers also incredible! HI-FI Man headphones and amp were outstanding in the headphone area. Some very interesting Digital Tech from a pair of guys called ImmersAV; binaurual recordings in high def. They took mediocre speakers and made them incredible just by using their audio recording technique and playing it back digitally through an Ipad! (Mercer, you need to talk to these guys. They could single-highhandedly take over Digital with their recording technique. It's the closest thing to live I've heard come from a digital source.) Hell-uv-a-lot 'fun!

  • Back from day 1 of AXPONA. Peter Lederman of Soundsmith had an astounding vinyl set up. I hit his room and just stopped and listened for about 1.5 hours. Holy $^%&, I never knew vinyl could sound like that or for that kind of money. He's a real genius. I hope to afford one of his Carts and phono-preamps one day. I also hope to live with memory of that sound 'til I can.

  • Who's going to be at AXPONA in Chicago on 3/8 thru 3/10? I see Miles Astor will be moderating a seminar on Reel to Reel, very cool. Anyone else I know from the Audioevo community planning on attending?

  • Hello again fellow evoites. I've been away for a while due to no internet access at home. But as of a few minutes ago, that's been corrected. AT&T is out and Comcast is in. I'm looking forward to catching up on Tomaz's & David's music postings, Mercer's musings, and whatever else I've been missing. It's good to be back.

  • So I bought yet another old TT ; this time it was a Micro Seiki DD35. It's a beautiful table and well designed. Only one problem; an "auto mute function" engages when the tonearm "auto lifts" at the end of the LP. The mute circuit acted like a Dolby noise suppressor making it sound a bit dull in the low and high ranges. So with the help of my Bro this weekend, we bypassed the "mute circuit" and directly rewired the tonearm to a fresh set of RCA plugs on the back of the table. We left the ground wiring intact & removed the old RCA cables. Now, it sounds fantastic with a set of MIT 350 CVT's! I'm very pleased with it, but I have to admit a terrible truth. I'm hooked on old TT's. This my 3rd table I've bought & modified. This has got to stop....

  • So, I sprang for a new set of speaker cables on 2ndary system. MIT MH-770 twin terminators in bi-wire configuration. I'm breaking them in now, and so far I really like them. They are way more open and detailed and image just a hair better. One curious thing; my Cary tube mono's usually warm up and play sweetly within about 5-7 minutes with the old cables (MH-750's). I'm noticing that these cables don't seem to sound their best until about 20-30 minutes into a listening session. Is it a difference in cables or am I just hearing more of the tube warm up cycle with the 770's? I'm not sure what's happening here. Any thoughts from fellow tube heads?

  • AT&T killed my DSL line for a week. Just got it back this morning. It's been rough without Internet access except for the 3G network on my phone. It forced me to listen to more music (CD's mostly) and read from actual books for entertainment. It's weird how we become used to having so much data, visual and aural, at our fingertips. I felt isolated and deprived. But 15 years ago when I did not have internet access at home, I never felt that way. How times have changed.......
