New member help

Hi. I just signed up and can't figure out a couple of things about the site:

1. How do I search posts (other than by Google searching against the domain name?)

2. How do I disable the buttons on the right that bounce up and down while I'm trying to read the posts? They are highly irritating. (I'm talking about the twitter, facebook, etc. buttons)

3. Are there RSS feeds for the groups that I join?

I think that's it for now. Thanks.

Hello Carl,

1. Right now we don't have a traditional search function like you would find on a forum. You can search fro people by going to Friends > Search or Friends > Advanced Search.

2. There is no disabling the social media buttons on the right side. If you find they are getting in the way due to low screen resolution or some other issue, please let me know and we can work to get that fixed.

3. We are planning on rolling out RSS feeds for groups. Stay tuned.

Best,

Gavin

Thanks for getting back to me. It's just hard to make sense of how the site is supposed to work.

The social networking icons are horribly irritating. It's not a monitor resolution issue: I have a 32" monitor on my desk, and my MacBook Pro 15" screen has very good resolution when I'm away from my desk. The issue is that the icons bounce up and down when I'm scrolling to read discussion threads. I don't think I'm alone in being distracted by things moving around on the screen when I'm trying to read.

In fact, someone seconded my concern about the implementation of the social networking icons. Which raises another point of confusion: the comment that the other member made is not showing up here. Where did it go? I see it in one location and it's gone in another. That's just pointless in my view. The discussion thread should not change it's content depending on what path I take to view it on the site.

In any case, the social networking buttons serve no purpose for me, and I suspect many other users. This site is the community of interest--the people here are the ones who might care about the esoteric topics we're discussing. I'm not going to tweet or post to Facebook about some discussion thread regarding tube rolling or bi-wiring or whatever. My friends on Facebook could care less about that stuff, and if they do care they are here (or on another Audiophile site) participating directly. It seems like everything on the Internet now has the little social networking chiclets polluting the screen. The reality is that it's trivially easy to tweet or post to Facebook or Reddit without the little buttons. They are silly in my view (even when they aren't flying all over the screen distracting users).

Regarding the lack of RSS feeds, it's typical of forum sites to be lacking in that regard, and I was just hoping that this one would be an improvement. AudioCircle, for example, has only an RSS feed for all new posts. It isn't possible to follow individual forums. It sounds like you are working on improving that.

The lack of a mechanism within the site to search the posts, however, is a step backwards. Being able to find posts on topics of interest is a fundamental need for a site like this. The reason people join is to find discussions about things that interest them. Without a robust search feature within the site, it loses substantial utility. All of the forum sites that I've joined have attracted me at the outset because I searched and found discussions about topics that interest me.

I hope things evolve, and despite the critique I do wish you well.
